Focus on: Joe Dambach
Joe Dambach, Molex global new product development manager, can be seen—and heard—at many trade shows. He’s the one who’s calmly yet enthusiastically explaining and demonstrating the many uses for Molex’s newest cable and interconnect products. If you’ve been intrigued or impressed by Molex’s work, it may very well be because you’ve met Joe.

Joe Dambach
Global New Product Development Manager
Molex Inc., Lisle, IL, U.S.

Previous industry positions:
Draftsman, engineering manager, and everything in between, including product manager, and group product manager.

Accomplishments you’re proud of:
My family. Getting my MBA. Various patents and product design—especially the first fiber optic blind mate backplane system, which was designed for Tellabs in the ’80s.

First job:
Trainee draftsman at Molex

Favorite website:
Mises.org

The last book I read:
The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie. At any point, I have three or four books going—topics include economics, history and technology, some novels, and fantasy.

Why did you choose this industry for your profession?
I’ve always been interested in electronics, and engineering/science. My wife worked at Molex in 1974, I interviewed for a drafting position, and except for a two-year stint at Cinch, I have been at Molex my entire career.

If I knew then what I know now, I would have:
Gone to college instead of combining work and night school. But then everything would have turned out different, and I would not want to change a thing.

What trend in the industry is affecting your job and what would you like to do about it? High-speed differential signal transmission, as I earned an EE at night, this fit well. I would like to continue learning is this area, because standardization and interoperability will be VERY challenging at 25 Gb/s.

Other comments:
I have worked with and learned from so many excellent people; they all have my gratitude. I could not even begin to name them all. And I am very grateful to my wife, who has tolerated the night school and business travel all my life, with little complaint. Half of my success is hers.
