Neoconix introduces a revolutionary new approach to the design,
manufacture, and integration of electrical interconnects.

Headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA, Neoconix offers advanced connector products based on its innovative PCBeam™ interconnection technology.

Neoconix has developed a method to utilize printed circuit board (PCB) processing techniques to produce electrical connectors and embedded interconnects. Combining unparalleled design flexibility with high volume manufacturability, Neoconix enables a broad new range of system level design options.

“Our goal is to provide more freedom to the system designer. Whether it is driving to higher densities, tuning electrical/mechanical performance, or even embedding contacts directly onto a functional component, our unique design/manufacturing process has the inherent flexibility to deliver what our customer really needs,” said Dirk Brown, EVP marketing and corporate strategy.

PCBeam™ Technology
Neoconix’s PCBeam interconnect technology adds a third dimension (height) to a traditionally two-dimensional PCB substrate.

If one envisions a trace emanating upward off of a PCB, that is essentially how an individual PCBeam contact element might appear. The difference is that the size, shape, and mechanical properties of that contact element have been carefully engineered to meet the rigorous electrical/mechanical performance requirements of a separable connection interface.

Contact element shapes are defined with photolithography, allowing minor changes to be made with simple CAD artwork changes rather than elaborate mold and tooling changes. The dimensional precision of photolithography allows scalability to fine feature sizes and enables fine-tuning of different contact designs. The contact element designs can vary based on center-to-center contact spacing and other features required in a given application.

FR-4 is the most common substrate, but many other substrate materials are available, including even thin polyimide flex material. That allows Neoconix to offer high density array connectors that are ultra-low profile, or even flat flex cable assemblies with compliant contacts embedded directly on the cable.

Manufacturing
Neoconix operates a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at its Sunnyvale headquarters for prototyping and low-to-medium volume production. Neoconix connectors are batch processed in panel format, much like traditional PCBs, but with special processes to incorporate and protect the unique 3-D features.

“The beauty of a manufacturing operation that is largely PCB-based is that we can leverage highly flexible factories locally to address prototyping and highly custom business, while simultaneously having access to a broad, mature, worldwide PCB manufacturing infrastructure for high volume applications,” said Larry Dittmann, EVP of business development.

Connector Products
Neoconix’s current connector product offerings include land grid array (LGA) interposers, board-to-board connectors, flexible interconnects, and embedded connectors. Products can take a variety of form factors, but typically have some type of area-array contact pattern. Connectors can be surface mounted or compression mounted. Neoconix also offers many types of custom connection solutions.

Embedded Contacts
Neoconix offers the only embedded contacts solution of its kind. In this approach, compliant contact elements are integrated directly onto a component with other functionality (e.g. modules, packages, functional boards, flex circuits). This type of solution completely eliminates a separable connection interface, reduces connection profile, and eliminates a connector from the bill of materials.

Market Usage
Neoconix products are applicable across a number of markets, including:

  • Automatic Test Equipment

  • Computing

  • Medical Electronics

  • Mobile and Handheld Devices
