The flexible silicone overmolding on Molex Affinity MediSpec cable assemblies protects the cable core from moisture ingress.

Molex Affinity Medical MediSpec Silicon CableThe new Molex Affinity MediSpec silicone cable solutions will be showcased February 11-13, 2014, at the Molex booth (1746) at MD&M West in Anaheim, Calif.

“We have extensive expertise in the design, development, and manufacturing of medical cables, connectors, and other electromechanical products in our FDA-registered and ISO 13485-certified facilities,” said Bob Frank, general manager, Affinity Medical.

Reusable and ergonomic MediSpec silicone overmolded cable and interconnect assemblies deliver high reliability and performance in medical applications, including endoscopy, ophthalmic lasers, surgical power tools, and other operating room instruments. Creating a moisture-proof chemical and mechanical bond between the cable jacket, connector, and flex relief, silicone overmolding provides a stronger bond to metal connector components than thermoplastic resins.  Incorporating both extruded and tubed-on silicone, the jacketed cables are durable and extremely flexible, while protecting the cable core.

“The unique low temperature, low pressure characteristics of custom liquid injection silicone molding create a bond against moisture ingress,” said Frank.

MediSpec products are designed, tested, and validated to withstand multiple sterilization cycles by autoclave, as well as by proprietary Steris and Sterrad processes.  All materials meet US FDA and global biocompatibility and cytotoxicity requirements.
